Lenny and Scarlett novel Chapter 37

It was windy and drizzling enough outside to soak Scarlet's trousers.

She held on to her umbrella with much difficulty, which made Drake a little worried.

He immediately went upstairs, intending to inform Lenny, but when he overheard the conversation from inside Lenny's study, he halted.

No one was allowed to disturb Lenny when he was in a meeting. That was one of his strictly implemented rules.

Ten minutes later, Lenny stepped out.

He saw Drake standing outside his door. It seemed that his trusted subordinate wanted to say something but couldn't decide if he should.

"What's wrong?"

"Miss Brown has left, sir."

"What?"

Lenny felt his heart skip a beat. He clenched his jaws and knitted his brows.

He looked outside. It was raining heavily, and the wind was blowing again.

"She insisted on leaving, sir. She even said that she hoped she wouldn't need to see us again. When she left, the weather had calmed down a bit. But it just started raining heavily again, and the wind is getting stronger by the minute. According to the news, the typhoon is still in the area, and we should expect heavy downpour for the rest of the day."

"You just let her leave by herself? Why didn't you tell me?"

"When she left, sir... You were in a meeting..."

Drake didn't continue.

Lenny's face turned livid with anger. Scarlet was weak and frail, just like Rosaline. Their only difference was that Rosaline always cried and made a scene while Scarlet always bore her pain in silence.

His mother often praised Scarlet for being smart and sweet. Why was she being so stubborn and stupid this time?

Lenny took an umbrella and rushed into the rain. Seeing this, Drake followed him.

Even Lenny, a man of considerable strength, had to grab onto the umbrella with all his might. A petite woman like Scarlet wouldn't stand a chance against this kind of weather.

She had only walked for ten minutes and wasn't supposed to be too far away from the villa. Lenny had to hurry up to find her.

At this moment, Scarlet had made it to the place where the road was blocked by fallen trees. Two big trees were in the middle of the street, obstructing her way.

Although she was holding an umbrella, she was almost completely wet.

She struggled to climb over the tree trunks, but she found it hard to balance herself because her shoes were now covered in mud. She almost slipped and fell.

As she was trying to get to the other side, a strong gust of wind blew, ripping away her umbrella from her hand and sending it up into the air.

She was so thin that the wind almost carried her away as well.

"Oh, God, are you doing this to me on purpose? The skies were clearing when I left the villa, but now it's raining cats and dogs again. Can you stop playing this trick on me?"

Scarlet felt so wronged. She held her belly tightly.

"I'm so sorry, my baby. If I had known that the weather would be like this, I wouldn't have left even if Rosaline held a knife to my throat."

It was indeed a bad decision to leave. Now she had put not only her own life at risk but also her child's.

But then again, she couldn't turn around and go back to the villa. She continued trying to make her way over the trees. Then, she heard a familiar voice.

"Scarlet."

Startled, she looked behind her and saw Lenny.

"What are you doing here?"

"It's pouring heavily. Where do you think you're going? Are you trying to court death?"

"I'm fine. I just need to get over these trees and make my way to the bus station so that I can go home."

"Do you really think buses are operating now?"

"Then I'll take a cab."

"Just come back to the villa with me."

"I'd love to, but I don't want to make Miss Marshall feel uneasy. She doesn't feel too comfortable with me in the villa. She's pregnant, and I can't be selfish. I promised her that I wouldn't bother you anymore. I'm already out here. If I try harder, I'll be home soon. Just go home to Miss Marshall. Don't make her worry about you. If you want to help me, then give me your umbrella and share Drake's when you go back." This was her only request.

Hearing this, Lenny felt like his heart was being smothered.

He gave his umbrella to Scarlet as she asked. Scarlet couldn't help breathing a sigh of relief. When she was about to go on her way, Lenny turned his back to her and squatted down.

"What are you doing?"

"I will take you home."

"Are you kidding me?"

"If you don't want to wait out the storm in my house, then at least let me take you home. You can't make it through the rain on your own. We may not be a couple anymore, but I can't just sit around and do nothing while you brave this kind of weather by yourself. Just let me, okay? Go on. Climb on my back."

His last two sentences sounded very much like an order. For a moment, Scarlet couldn't decide what to do.
