Chapter 60
Cassie.
Just while we’re here. I will allow Kayden to make up for the years of pain and heartaches he has caused me.’
*od! Is that even possible?
Morever, is it even necessary? I’m happy now without him, aren’t I?
But then… I’ve been married to him for four years. And I remember during those times, I have always wondered what it would have been like if he didn’t hate me. I was head over heels in love with him. Surely, he has some redeeming qualities if I loved him so much for four years. Maybe I wasn’t such a bad judge of character after all.
I splash my face with water.
“You must be out of your d*mn mind!” I scold myself in the mirror.
I dry my face with a towel before I go out of the bathroom.
“You okay?” Kayden asks.
His presence on the side of the door startles me. “Holy crap! You scared me!”
“I’m sorry, love. I didn’t mean to startle you.” He chuckles.
He looks at me intently with his deep, mesmerizing eyes that reminds me of why I fell hard for him in the past. My heart races at the intensity of his gaze, and for a moment, I forget why I was so determined to keep my guard up around him.
‘Right. Not today,’ I remind myself.
Today and until after the storm, I’m supposed to be open. I’m not supposed to repel his efforts to charm me. That was our deal.
Kayden extends his hand to me, a silent invitation as he leads me to the bed. It feels foreign to me, as he never really did this in the past. Before, he was aloof. Even after sex, he’d never hold me.
He sits on the bed, and pulls me with him. Then he takes off his shirt.
“Kayden, why are you taking off your shirt? We just…”
He laughs. “Relax, okay? I always sleep shirtless, remember?”
Oh, he’s right. He did sleep without a shirt on. I remember it well, because at nights when I could not sleep, I remember staring at the muscles on his back.
He lies on the bed. Suddenly, he gathers me in his arms. I close my eyes, savoring the feel of his arms around my body as I rest my head against his shoulder.
“Will Kai be okay without you?”
“Yes. I called him while I was in the bathroom. He’ll be fine. He’s a smart kid, and Lyn is with him.”
“Is he going to school already?”
“Yes, he is. And he’s been skipping grades. He’s really smart.”
As I lay there, my head resting against his chest, I can hear the steady rhythm of his heartbeat matching mine. It’s a

comforting sound, one that fills me with an inexplicable sense of peace and contentment. For a moment, all the pain and heartache of the past fade away, leaving only the present – just him and me, together in this intimate moment.
Kayden’s fingers trace gentle patterns on my back, sending shivers down my spine. As his touch lingers on my skin, I squirm, feeling ticklish.
“What’s the matter?” he asks!
“Nothing. It tickles,” I reply. He chuckles, and then suddenly, he starts tickling me. “Kayden, stop!”
I can’t help but laugh uncontrollably as Kayden’s fingers dance lightly on my skin, sending delightful shivers through my body. His touch is both playful and tender, a side of him I never knew existed when we were married. I squirm and try to push his hands away, but he keeps tickling me with a mischievous glint in his eyes.

“Kayden!” I manage to gasp between fits of laughter, my cheeks hurting from smiling so much. But he only laughs along with me, the sound of his deep chuckles mixing with mine in the room.
Finally, he relents, letting me catch my breath as I playfully glare at him. “You’re impossible,” I tease, feeling a warmth in my chest that I haven’t felt in a long time.
He smiles back at me, his gaze soft and affectionate. “It’s an amazing sound.”
“What is?” I ask.
“Your laughter.” He reaches forward to push a lock of stray hair away from my face. “I don’t think I’ve heard you laugh before. I realize… it’s a beautiful sound.”
“I don’t think I’ve heard you laugh before, too.
He sighs. “I’m sorry. Four years of your life were wasted thinking I was incapable of something as simple as a smile.”
I reached up. My fingers touch the sides of his lip and slowly, I tilt the corners upward. “There. It suits you
better.”
He smiles for real. Then he leans forward and gives me a kiss. The kiss starts out as gentle, innocent even. Then it turns raging, like the storm outside. Kayden’s hands start to roam my body, tracing the curves of my body that sends a rush of desire within me.
As our lips move together, I feel myself falling deeper under Kayden’s spell.
He leans on top of me and I feel him rock hard against my thigh I stop kissing him all of a sudden.
“Kayden!” I gasp. “You’re… we just…”
He chuckles. “Well, can you blame me? My wife is so f*cking hot!”
Wife…
I blush. I have to admit that it feels good hearing him call me that.
“But don’t worry,” he says. “I’m not going to wear you out tonight. I know you’re pretty tired.”
He leans forward and gives me a chaste kiss on the lips. But just as I begin to relax into the moment, a deafening clap of thunder shakes the ground beneath us. My heart races and my body jerks away from him. Kayden lies back in bed, gathering me back into his arms. He encloses me in a protective embrace. “Sleep now, love. I’m here. I’ll protect you. Always.”
I relax into Kayden’s arms. I let him hold me through the night, until sleep has finally taken over my senses.
When I awaken, the morning light filters through the curtains, casting soft shadows on the walls. Kayden’s arm is still draped

gently across my waist, and Lcan’t help but smile at the sight. As I begin to stir, I notice the silence that has settled over the room, and a sense of unease creeps in.
I try to sit up, but something is holding me down, keeping me pinned to the bed.
The more I struggle, the stronger the sensation becomes until I realize I’m not just being held down by an unseen force-I’m trapped within a confined space. The walls are closing in around me, and the air grows thick and heavy, like an oppressive weight. Panic sets in as I try to scream for help, but the sound is choked off, silenced by an invisible barrier that surrounds
me.
I can’t breathe! I’m suffocating! My mind races as the darkness engulfs me, leaving nothing but a void of emptiness. I know I’m trapped, but I don’t know where or why. As panic coursing through my veins reaches its peak, I feel a faint glimmer of hope.

“Love…” I hear Kayden’s voice somewhere in the distance. I follow his voice as I push through the invisible walls.
“Kayden!”
Suddenly, I bolt up from the bed, waking up from that hellish nightmare.
When I finally come back to my senses, I realize that I’m alone in bed.
Kayden is nowhere to be found.
