The Billionaire's Ex-Wife (Her Ex-Husband's Regret) novel Chapter 18

Chapter 18

Kayden.

The moment I step into the vast lake house property, memories start flooding my brain. Memories of my childhood, my mother, and that day I met the woman I promised to take care of for the rest of my life-Megan.

Amanda had a point yesterday when she reminded me that Megan saved my life. I feel guilty because I know I have been neglecting her lately. I had been too busy with work. Acquiring King’s Court had been my top priority, and then… Cassie came back to town, and she had been on my mind a lot.

Fuck

It should be Megan. I made a promise a long time ago. It wasn’t like me to go back on a promise. I think Megan and I have been disconnected lately. We have been growing apart. I am discovering that we usually don’t like the same things.

Maybe we just need time to reconnect. I need to be reminded of our connection. That’s why I chose to take her back here, to the lake resort that my family owned. Because this is where it all began.

“Why are we here?” she asks. “I thought we re gonna go shopping.”

“Don’t you shop with your friends all the time?”

She frowns. “But you said we’re going on a date.

I nod. “Yes. And this is it. I took the day off so we can spend some time with nature.”

“Are we spending the night here?”

Immediately, I cringe. The last time I spent the night here was when my father announced that he was going to marry my stepmother. And that didn’t end well for me.

“We’ll just spend the day. We haven’t been here in a long time. I heard they made a lot of improvements and ad facilities. Let’s just check it out.”

“Okay, whatever you say, sweetheart.”

Is that sarcasmn I hear in her voice?

I am amazed by the transformation that has taken place since the last time I was here. The lake glistens under the bri inviting us to explore its new water attractions.

“Did you pack your bathing suit like I told you to?” I ask her.

“Yeah. But I’m not going in one of those slides,” she replies. “I’ll just sunbathe.”

Her answer disappoints me a little. I was hoping we could have a little fun under the sun.

As we enter the main lobby, I can see that the staff were busy preparing for an event.

“Good morning, Mister Steele,” the manager greets me.

“What’s going on?”

Chapter 18

“Oh, we have some

e VIP guests who will dine at the restaurant. They made some special requests.”

“All the hassle for one guest?” Megan asks, rolling her eyes.

“Of course, Ma’am. Mister Steele has repeatedly emphasized on customer satisfaction. And besides he smiles at me proudly. “We were compensated handsomely for it.”

“Well, keep up the good work.” I pat him on the back.

I pull Megan’s hand and lead her towards the garden. Years ago. paid my contractors to build a treehouse in place of my old playhouse.

“Where are you taking me?” she asks.

“You’ll see!” My eyes glitter with excitement. I can’t wait to show Megan the treehouse. After all, it was her suggestion.

We reach the garden and right in the center, just a few meters away from the lake, sits a massive treehouse constructed on sturdy tree. The charming house is perched high above the ground, it’s wooden structure showcasing intricate carvings and designs that seem to come alive under the sunlight.

I pull Megan so we can climb up the wooden staircase.

“Do we really have to?” she asks.

“Of course!”

“I don’t think the steps are safe,” she keeps complaining.

“It is safe, silly. Besides, I’ll catch you if you fall.”

Reluctantly, she climbs up the stairs and I closely follow. Once inside, I watch Megan’s expression as she looks around. Maybe I was waiting for her to acknowledge that I followed her suggestion when we first met. I built a treehouse in this garden.

But Megan doesn’t say anything. She just continues to look around with a bored expression on her face.

“Wh-what do you think?” I ask.

She shrugs. “Shouldn’t this treehouse be in the main garden near the main entrance?”

“Huh?”

Did I hear her right?

“I mean it’s a waste to have it here. Who would wander off in this part of the resort?”

Again, did 1 hear her right?

She notices the intercom on the side of the door, along with the emergency box. She opens the box and pulls out two sets of blankets from it. My mouthcurves into a smile. I remember her complaining when we first met. “Why is there only one set of blankets? Do you not come here with playmates?”

I ordered the intercom and the toolbox with blankets in case somebody gets trapped here again.

“Who uses the intercom nowadays?” Megan asks

“It’s connected to the security guards.”

would

She rolls her eyes. “As if kids would know how to use it. And why are there blankets when there’s no bed?”

1 stare back at her, completely puzzled. It isn’t the reaction I was expecting from her.

I expected her to laugh or maybe even praise me for thinking of the intercom, the emergency lights, and the blankets. Not many people get trapped in the middle of the forest, but Megan and I were! We knew what it was like to be cold and helpless, and I thought this treehouse would be something only she could understand.

But now has she forgotten what we went through?

“Anyway, can we go now?”

Questions race inside my mind, but I simply nod. I was wondering if these memories did not really mean anything to Megan

As we walk back, I remember that I gave her a ring. That ring belonged to my mother.

“Megan, I gave you a ring before,” I say. “Do you still have it?”

She blinks back at me. Then she beams and flashes her finger in front of me. “It’s this one.”

I stare back at the platinum band on her finger and I nod in satisfaction.

“I know this belonged to your mother, she smiles. “I’m keeping it until you replace it with a different kind of ring.” Then she winks at me. I know exactly what ring she wants next time.

I’ll be damned!

I leave Megan to sunbathe in the pool area while I meet with the manager to make rounds at the resort.

When I get back. I find that there is a commotion in the pool area.

“What’s going on?” I ask the bystander.

“A child almost drowned. He jumped off the pool when the mother wasn’t looking”

“There’s a lifeguard, wasn’t there?”

“Yes. But that lady saw the child first and didn’t even bother to dive in.”

1 follow the direction he is pointing at and realize that he is referring to Megan, standing on the side, arguing with some

guests.

As I approach her, I can hear their conversation.

“Why is there no lifeguard around?” Megan argues. “The child could have drowned!”

“The lifeguard was attending to another guest. You were beside the child. Why didn’t you dive in?”

“Well Megan trails off, and I find myself waiting for her answer. “First, it’s not my job. And second… I… I can’t swim. If I dove in, the lifeguard would be saving us both. So, all I could do was scream.

Wait! Did I hear that right?
